Stones & Their Meanings

Amber (AB) comes in warm tones of honey yellow, orange brown, cherry red and sometimes yellow-green. The fossilised resin of extinct evergreen trees, it is probably one of the most magnetic stones and also one of the softest gems to cut or polish.

Amethyst (AM) . A purple stone long associated with royalty, amethyst is the birthstone for February and the astrological sign Pisces (21 Feb - 21 Mar). The name comes from the ancient Greek for "against mead"---as the stone was believed to offer protection against drunkenness and other forms of overindulgence!

Agate (Blue Agate Code BA) (Green Agate Code GA). Agate is a translucent stone that occurs all over the world in a wide variety of bright colours. Blue agates range from a dusky greyish hue to an intense sky blue and are associated with matters of the mind and intellect. The green agate is almost invariably a translucent forest green. It is believed to soothe the emotions and reduce mental confusion and anxiety.

Moonstone (MS)
is a highly translucent stone that ranges in colour from milky white to an icy variety reflecting all the colours of the rainbow. It has long been associated with moon magic and the power of prophecy. Moonstone and pearl are the birthstones for June. Meredith Jewellery uses only the most beautifully coloured rainbow moonstones.

Onyx (ON) is the black form of chalcedony, a member of the agate family. Its jet black opaqueness inspires its connection to qualities of solidity and physical and emotional stability. It is associated with the astrological sign Leo (22 Jul - 22 Aug).

Pearl (PE) is not a true stone, but an organic gem formed of the secretions of various molluscs that result in iridescent stones of white, blue, cream, rose, grey and even black. The freshwater pearls set in our jewellery come from river mussels. Pearl, along with moonstone, is considered the birthstone for June.

Peridot (PT) is a transparent olive green stone that also occurs in lemon yellow. The ancient Egyptians believed it contained the power of the sun and it was a gem highly prized by the Pharoahs. It is the birthstone for August and the astrological sign Libra (22 Sep - 23 Oct).

Topaz (TZ), one of the longest known gemstones, occurs in a broad spectrum of hues, from colourless to yellow, pale blue, rose, and even brown. The blue topaz we use in our jewellery gets its delicate colour from traces of iron in the stone. Topaz is the birthstone for November and the astrological sign Sagittarius
(21 Nov - 21 Dec).
